Every one of us has a picture in their head of who we wish to become: successful, confident, kind, creative, or disciplined. However, all too often, it seems unclear or out of reach how to achieve it. The good news is, becoming the best “you” is not about being perfect. It’s about growth, intention, and continuous action.
- Define What “Best” Means to You
Your journey begins with clarity. What does “the best you” sound like? Is it someone running a thriving business? Someone who is healthy and fit, physically and mentally? A great parent, artist, or student? Be specific. Write it down. Having your endpoint, it’s easier to map the journey.
Create a vision board or journal entry describing your best self in as much detail as possible.
- Set Real and Specific Goals
You now have a sense of what you wish to accomplish. Break it down into manageable smaller goals. Desire to be confident? Start with public speaking. Desire to be healthier? Begin with a daily walk or prep meals. Specific goals cause you to track progress and remain motivated.
Progress, not perfection, is the key.
- Invest in Yourself Daily
It’s a daily choice to be your best self. Read books, gain a new skill, attend workshops, or simply take the time to think. Growth requires work and effort, but even the smallest everyday routines can have gigantic impacts in the long run.
“You will never always be motivated, so you must learn to be disciplined.”
- Surround Yourself with Growth-Minded People
The people that are around you influence your behavior and attitude more than you know. Find yourself around people that challenge you, inspire you, and hold you accountable. Avoid discouragement and negativity.
You will become like the people you spend most of your time with — be smart.
- Practice Self-Compassion
You will fall. You will fail. That’s growing up and part of the process. Rather than be critical of yourself, learn how to forgive and motivate yourself the way you would your best friend. Getting better takes time, and failures are not failures; they are learning opportunities.
- Take Care of Your Body and Mind
Your health is the foundation for everything you do. Exercise regularly, eat well, sleep, and take time to relax. And don’t neglect your mind — meditation, prayer, writing, or counseling can do wonders.
A healthy body and mind prepare you for life.
- Share Your Time and Stay Humble
As you become the best version of yourself, don’t forget to make others greater as well. Kindness, empathy, and humility are marks of great greatness. Helping others puts your own life into perspective.
